Orlando Hits - Beefy King

Orlando is known for it's theme parks, but there's plenty more to see and experience. This is the first in a series of posts highlighting some personal Orlando favorites.

For 49 years, there's been a restaurant serving Orlando that, in my opinion, is one-of-a-kind. The Beefy King restaurant on Bumby Avenue serves up steamed roast beef sandwiches that are not only delicious, but legendary. While there were once six Beefy King restaurants in Central Florida, this is the only remaining location.

They're only open for lunch Monday-Saturday, so plan on a short wait unless you avoid the lunch rush. I'd suggest ordering inside (they have a drive-thru if you're in a rush) and soaking up the 1968 decor while enjoying a made-to-order sandwich.

This TripAdvisor report sums it up nicely: Steamed roast beef goodness

Sure there are hundreds of other restaurants to enjoy in Orlando, but I like restaurants that count on locals, not visitors, to stay in business. Beefy King has a loyal following and seems to take pride in being a hometown success.

Full disclosure: I've been one of those loyal customers since the early 1970's, first at their Kissimmee location on Bermuda Avenue, then West Vine Street, then finally Bumby Avenue for the last 30 or so years.
